Large six panel screen, ink, color, and gold on paper; depicting three elegant ox-carts, drawn up in a row beside two scarlet-leafed maples (momiji), set against a gold leaf ground. 5ft 6in x 12ft 4in (1.68m x 3.76m)

  • Note: the combination of carriages and momiji may be an allusion to Chapter 7 of the Tale of Genji, Momiji no ga (Beneath the Autumn Leaves). In a famous episode, Genji and To no Chujo perform the dance “Blue Sea Waves” among falling red leaves, during an excursion to the Suzaku Palace.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $12,500 up to and including $600,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $600,000 up to and including $6,000,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of $6,000,000.
