WILSON, SCOTT BARCHARD, & ARTHUR HUMBLE EVANS.
Aves Hawaiienses: The Birds of the Sandwich Islands. London; R.H. Porter, 1890-1899. 8 parts in one volume. Illustrated with 63 (of 64) hand-colored lithographic plates after Frederick William Frohawk, 3 photogravure plates of nests, 3 plain lithographic plates (though one with partial color), and one lithographic map. 4to (315 x 246 mm). Period half red calf over cloth boards, spine in 6 compartments, two with gilt-lettered green morocco lables, the others with heavy gilt decoration, t.e.g. Wanting 2nd (of 2) Loxops Aurea / Loxops Rufa plates, internally clean, binding with corners and joints rubbed, light shelfwear.

First edition, thought to be limited to 250 copies and considered by Forbes to be one of the two great ornithological works on Hawaiian birds. This collection is particularly important for depicting many birds now extinct because of deforestation and disease brought by non-natives. "The text is comprehensive and the illustrations very fine examples of Frohawk's careful work. So often, in lithographic work the general effect is one of diffuse colour and lack of definition. Frohawk manages to crisper, clear-cut profiles of his birds, and there is little wooliness about his bird pictures" (Jackson). Anker 536; BM (NH) V, p 2334; Sitwell Fine Bird Books, p 157; Jackson Bird Illustrators, p 105; Nissen IVB 1000; Wood, p 631; Forbes 4238; Zimmer, Ayer Lib., p 686-687; Anker Bird books, 536; Forbes 4238.
