A rare Confederate Morse Type I breechloading carbine
Serial no. 85, .50 Centerfire. 20 inch round barrel with octagonal breech. Brass fore-sight. Serial numbered on frame in front of triggerguard and on breechblock. Varnished butternut stock and fore-end. Brass fore-end cap and buttplate. Original iron ramrod with turned head, the threaded tip fitted to cleaning device contained in buttplate.
Condition: Very good. Barrel with smooth brown patina showing some pitting at muzzle. Unpolished brass showing numerous small marks. Fine wood with scattered light marks.

  • Note: Invented by George Washington Morse, who owned a number of patents for breechloading firearms, the first granted in 1856. Approximately 1000 specimens manufactured with under 200 of the Type I. Production in Greensboro, South Carolina with captured machinery from Harpers Ferry Armory and issued mainly to South Carolina units. See Flayderman's Guide..., Section 10-042.
