A Colt Model 1851 Richards-Mason conversion revolver
Serial no. 89278 for 1858, .38 Centerfire. 7 1/2 inch New York marked barrel. Nickel-plated ejector housing. Cylinder numbered 009. Loading gate numbered 516. Rear face of cylinder numbered 7886. Brass triggerguard/gripstrap, the buttstrap marked USN. Replaced varnished walnut grips, the right side with inspector's cartouche MM.
Condition: Very good. Grey metal showing scattered minor pitting and generally sharp markings. Cylinder showing some wear to scene. Grips with light marks. Buttstrap with numerous small dents.

  • Note: While many variations in the U.S. Navy-Navy conversion revolvers are noted in the literature dealing with this subject and some specimens are seen with no inspector's marks on the barrel or cylinder, it seems likely that the buttstrap markings on this example are spurious.
