Footnotes

  • Hashidate Shisen was a student of the Maruyama-Shijo school founded by Maruyama Okyo (1733-95). The Shijo school specialized in painting realistic empirical studies from nature. Scenes of fish and other water life soon became a standard repertoire in the hands of Shijo School artists.

In these screens, the contrast between the abstract rendering of the shrimp emerging from the water and the highly realistic, detailed studies of the gold fish in color, highlights Shisen's great and varied artistic abilities.

For a similar example of a hanging scroll of fish and sea life, see Special Exhibition Maruyama Okyo: Shaseiga-Challenging a New Frontier exh. cat. (Tokyo: Edo-Tokyo Museum, 2004), 269.

There is a hanging scroll of similar subject by the artist in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, titled Fish Near Shore, accession number 11.8570.
