Enormous and Weighty Gold-in-Quartz Specimen–The “Liberated Lady”
Pilbara, Newman, West Australia
The Pilbara Goldfield, discovered in 1885, is located near Newman, a small mining town approximately 1186 km north of Perth. Discovered by an elderly lady “prospector” with a metal detector, the specimen was found at a depth of approximately 1 meter. It took over 4 hours to dig out and thus she christened it the “Liberated Lady”.

Most likely one of the largest nuggets to come out of the gold field in over 100 years, this is a very ancient specimen – attested to by the bleached white of the quartz, and its rounded or weathered appearance having been exposed to the earth and elements for eons. The specimen is laced with crystalline gold—much of it visible on the edges and in veins across the surface. However, when holding the specimen one realizes it is far heavier than it looks—evidence for a large gold content within the matrix. Specific gravity and weighing procedures, invented in Australia and employed industry wide, are used to determine the net gold content. The finding is sizable—about 75% of the specimen is actually gold! Gross weight 145.8 ozt (4534 grams); Net weight 109.3 ozt (3398 grams) Measuring 9 ¼ x 5 ½ x 2 ¾ in
