Large Green Knotty Petrified Log
Sequoia
Jurassic
Upper Chinle Formation, Northern Arizona
This rare and beautiful specimen of chromium, or green, petrified wood was discovered in a very small and isolated deposit north of the Winslow Formation in Northern Arizona. The zone of fossil bearing sediment is situated beneath 4 to 5 feet of capping rock, making the recovery of any specimen arduous work. The strength of the green color in the present specimen is produced by a 2% trace of the element chromium. As the humidity increases, the color darkens. This is an extremely large log for this type of fossilization. Measures 11 x 8 x 6in
