1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Limousine
Coachwork by Hooper & Co. Ltd

Chassis no. 3BU172
In late 1935 Rolls-Royce announced its finest automobile yet, the Phantom III. The heart of this luxurious motorcar was the company's first V-12 automotive engine. The big 7,338cc twelve used a single camshaft mounted in the engine block to actuate its overhead valves. It was silky, it was smooth, and it was quiet. However, because it was designed primarily with English conditions in mind, it was not ideally suited for high-speed Continental touring, which could cause heat-related engine failure. Warnings to restrict extended top speeds to no more than 75-80 miles per hour and a taller fourth gear worked to prolong engine life.

The chassis that carried the Rolls-Royce V-12 was fitted with a coil-spring independent front suspension based on a General Motors design. Rear suspension was conventional, with a solid rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Braking was handled by servo-assisted mechanically-operated drums on all four wheels.

This Rolls-Royce Phantom III with elegant Limousine coachwork by Hooper, is a striking example in silver with burgundy accents. Originally registered in the UK as FJB18, it features a driver's compartment trimmed in black leather and partitioned from the rear chamber by a wind-up division. The passenger's seating is upholstered in grey cloth, and the compartment is steeped in wood veneer. All in all a very elegant Rolls Royce, indeed.
