#17349
1931 Ford Model AA Postal Delivery Truck
Chassis no. AA4018873
The twin trucks here offered (please see lot 118B) were originally part of a 1931 US Post Office order for 1,500 Model AA Ford truck chassis equipped with 200-cu. ft. delivery bodies, built to uniform government specifications by independent body builders. Both trucks were counted among the seven units from the order assigned to the Minneapolis Post Office.

After logging an average 600,000 miles each in Post Office service, the seven rugged Fords were sold at a 1955 surplus auction, with all going to the same bidder. The trucks were subsequently dispersed and the vendor obtained unit #17350 in California in 1991, later discovering and acquiring #17349 in Montana during 1996.

A restorer by profession, the vendor essentially remanufactured both trucks from the ground up. The Ford chassis and powertrains were totally renovated both mechanically and cosmetically. "The end product is as good as new," states the vendor.

The wooden delivery bodies were expertly reconstructed, using hand-selected top-grade oak and poplar hard woods. The quality of work evident in these recreated bodies, which were assembled using the original bracing, is most impressive. The two bodies were built side-by-side in unison, a procedure that was not only efficient, but also ensured the finished vehicles would be identical. Hundreds of man-hours went into the woodwork before the trucks were completed in 2004.

The paintwork is authentic, with the Ford chassis in black and bodies in military-type Olive Drab, as required by the Post Office when the units first went into service.

At consignment, unit 17349 had clocked 161.2 miles and 17350 had traveled 109.5 miles since restoration.

The two Ford Model AA Postal Delivery Trucks are offered with Washington state titles held by the vendor.
