1949 Indian Vagabond
Frame no. S1177
Following World War II, Indian was in trouble. Their dealer network was deteriorated, their factory tooling was antiquated and it appeared that the management continued to suck the life blood from the once prosperous company. In 1949, the venerable Chief was discontinued and in its place were a series of small vertical single cylinder and twin cylinder motorcycles, modeled after English motorcycles. In addition, Indian Motocycle Company contracted Lowther Manufacturing of Joliet, Illinois to produce a series of small motor scooters. Some 24 variants of this scooter were offered but probably only 3 made it to market, the Spartan, the Vagabond and the futuristic Stylemaster. Advertised as “America’s Most Modern Motor Scooter”, the scooters featured 6hp Briggs & Stratton motors, front and rear fenders, magneto ignition, a jiffy stand, a locking key ignition, front and rear safety guards, 2-passenger seat, and engine air scoop and a sparkling chrome headlight. After only one year, the project was discontinued.

This rare 1949 Indian Vagabond motor scooter is accurately restored and is one of only perhaps 18 known examples of Indian scooters. Correctly finished in black and brilliant red, this machine will enhance any motorcycle or scooter collection, representing the final era of the Indian Motocycle Company.
