1980 Tyrell 010 Monocoque Grand Prix Tub
This stark aluminum artifact is an icon of the most spectacular crash in the history of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Drivers Derek Daly and Jean-Pierre Jarier signed with the Tyrrell team in 1980, with sponsorship of the Italian appliance manufacturer Candy. Ken Tyrrell’s team had suffered lackluster results since Jackie Stewart won two world championships with his cars, and the new 010 aluminum monocoque tub was not overly competitive. In qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, Jarier managed just ninth, Daly twelfth.

The Monaco course is tricky. The first corner in 1980 was a large roundabout, which created a bottleneck on the first lap. Daly braked too late, barged into the back of Bruno Giacomelli’s Alfa, then leapt over it and the McLaren of Alain Prost before landing on the other Tyrrell driven by his teammate Jarier.

The unlucky tub was about to be consigned by Tyrrell to the scrap man when Grand Prix personage Eoin Young offered to buy it. Young then sold it to Peter Briggs, together with a set of photographs of the amazing crash, for display in Briggs’s York Motor Museum in Western Australia. It is offered here as seen, a singular bit of history for the discriminating collector.
