Footnotes

  • Commonly known as Madame Elizabeth, she was orphaned by her parents Louis the Dauphin and Marie Josephine of Saxony at the age of three. She was brought up by Madame de Mackau and had a residence at Montreuil. She loved her brother Louis so passionately that she refused all offers of marriage. At the outset of the French Revolution, she foresaw the gravity of events and refused to leave her brother's side. She accompanied him on his flight in 1792 and was arrested with him at Varennes. She was imprisoned alongside the Royal family in the Temple where she remained until May 1794 when she was transferred to the Conciergerie (where Marie Antoinette was already held). Accused of assisting the King's flight and supplying emigrés with funds, she was condemned to death and executed the same month.
