Circle of Frans Pourbus (Flemish, 1569-1622)
A pair of portraits of Rudolph I of Germany (1218-1291) and Gertrude of Hohenberg (c.1225-1281), he wearing flowered green doublet with gold buttons and embroidery and a white lace ruff, she wearing black dress with white lace ruff, pearl necklace and earrings, her brown hair upswept beneath a black hat with plaited band .
Oil on copper, gilt-metal frames, the reverses inscribed Rudolph 1st/ Emperor of Germany/ founder of the Austrian State/ Head of the house of hapsburg/ born may 1st 1218 d.sept 30th 1291/ painted by francis pourbus and Gertrude/ wife of rudolph 1st emperor of gMY/ Daughter of the count of homburg/ born 1230 d. 1280/ painted by f. pourbus/ brought the castle of homburg as a marriage portion respectively.
