Footnotes

  • Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, was the most influential statesmen of his age. Although initially protesting in Parliament against the arbitrary power of Charles I, he gained the king's confidence and was elevated to the position of Secretary of State in 1643. During the Civil War, and throughout his exile on the Continent, Hyde served as secretary to Charles II and became chief minister upon the Restoration of 1660. Essentially moderate in his views, he was a devoted Anglican and helped to firmly establish that church. His History of the Great Rebellion remains one of the greatest contemporary accounts of the Civil War. Hyde's daughter, Anne, was the first wife of the Duke of York (subsequently James II) and mother to two successive English queens, Mary II and Anne.

Evidence suggests that the artist signing 'DM' is in fact David Myers, for the present work bears the 'DM' monogram, besides an 1803 inscription attributing the portrait to him.
