In the late 1960s the Soviet Union concluded a contract to manufacture the FIAT 124 under license at a new purpose-built factory on the River Volga at Togliatti, a new town named after the former leader of the Italian Communist Party. Suitably modified to cope with the often less-than-perfect Russian roads, these Soviet-built saloons were marketed under the ‘Lada’ name in the West. There was a modest works rally effort too, usually confined to Eastern European events with the occasional foray further afield, and although the Lada was always slower than the opposition, it nevertheless scored a few notable successes on the tougher events that rewarded durability rather than outright speed.
In 1976 the first entirely Soviet-designed Lada appeared; this was the Niva, which arrived in time to cash in on the newly emerging market for small 4x4s. It was powered by the Lada saloon’s engine (of 1.5 or 1.6 litres) and used an in-house deigned four-wheel drive system that gave it a decisive edge over its, mainly Japanese, rivals in difficult off-road conditions.
This Niva 1600 was purchased new by the current owner on 7th July 1979 and entered by ‘Challenge Lada’ in the 3rd Paris-Dakar Rally, driven by the owner, François Jeanson and his son, also François, under competitor number ‘167’. One of 12 Nivas entered, ‘167’ started the event on 1st January 1981, departing from place du Trocadéro, Paris together with 170 other cars, 15 trucks and 106 motorcycles. The race was won by the Range Rover of Metge/Giroux, with the best-placed Lada finishing in 3rd place. Sadly, ‘167’ was one of many forced to abandon the event, which saw only 59 cars reach the finish.
The car we offer was specially prepared for this most gruelling of rallies, incorporating a large-capacity (150-litre) fuel tank, bumper protection front and rear, special lights, special suspension, and plastic bonnet, doors and boot. It comes with all the period paperwork, regulations, press articles and photographs taken during practice sessions prior to the race, and is offered with French Carte Grise. No reserve.

Cette Niva 1600 a été achetée neuve par le propriétaire le 7 juillet 1979 et engagée par "Challenge Lada" au troisième Rallye Paris-Dakar, sous le numéro de course "167". Elle était pilotée par son propriétaire François Jeanson, accompagné de son fils, François également. Etant l'une des douze Niva participantes, "167" a pris le départ le 1er janvier 1981 de la place du Trocadéro, à Paris, au milieu de cent soixante-dix autres voitures, quinze camions et cent six motos. La course a été remportée par la Range Rover de Metge/Giroux, la Lada la mieux placée finissant troisième. Malheureusement, "167" fut une des nombreuses voitures contraintes à l'abandon, seules cinquante-neuf d'entre elles réussissant à rallier l'arrivée.
La voiture que nous proposons a été spécialement préparée pour ce rallye très éprouvant pour les hommes et les mécaniques, avec un réservoir de grande capacité (150 litres), des protections avant et arrière, des phares spéciaux, une suspension spéciale ainsi que des portes, capot et porte de coffre en plastique. Elle comporte tout son dossier d'époque, les règlements, articles de presse et photos prises pendant les séances d'essai qui ont précédé la course. Elle est dotée d'une carte grise française.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalog.
