When Alan Clews started CCM in 1971 he created a legend. Over the next four decades the family run Lancashire firm made a wonderful contribution to British off-road sport and, whilst primarily regarded as motocross manufacturers, Jack Mathews took his CCM outfit to win the British Trials Sidecar Championship in 1973, Steve Saunders gained the Solo round in 1984, with a repeat the following year, which also saw Niall Mackenzie scoop the 250 ACU Road Race Championship on CCM. (the CCM also made their mark in Paris-Dakar and Supermoto!) Complete, and fully operative, the well-preserved Big Six was purchased new from Fowlers in February 1973, one of just 39 machines from CCM’s 1972 production build. Having raced it many times, and with good results, it is Tizzard’s favourite steed. Robbie Blake achieved countless victories in the SW Centre on this machine, including the Centre Championship, and the hotly contested Haynes Four Stroke Series [see picture]. Weighing in at 100kg it sports a 10:1 CR, and a claimed 50bhp. Originally based on BSA’s B50 the extensive modifications undertaken by CCM ensured these machines kept on the pace for almost a decade; e.g. it is fulfilling to record that a young CCM-mounted Austin Clews won an AMCA Championship in 1981! There are a number of unique features exclusive to early production examples, including the CCM logo cast into the timing side casing, and the top fork crown, plus the fitment of an occasionally useful de-compressor. The black and white CCM, with its chrome plated oil-in-tank frame, represents a handsome slice of British motocross history. Offered with a CCM leaflet, but no documents.
