Footnotes

  • Yorkshire's best-known motor manufacturer was founded in Bradford in 1901 by brothers Benjamin and William Jowett, whose blacksmith father owned a small engineering works. The Jowetts first experimented with powered transport in the closing years of the 19th Century and in 1901 began manufacturing bicycles and v-twin engines of their own design. In 1905 they introduced the horizontally opposed twin-cylinder engine that would power all Jowett's cars and light commercials up to 1936, and the Bradford van as late as 1953. This exceptionally long-lived motor was used in the first Jowett of 1906, although production proper did not commence until 1910. Made in small numbers, the early Jowetts were bodied locally by Ryder and then Humbouldt. Wheel steering replaced the original tiller in 1914 and after The Great War the engine capacity was increased from 815 to 907cc. Two-seater models would be the firm's staple product until the four-seater Long Four arrived in 1923, while the sidevalve 'flat twin' remained the only power unit on offer until the introduction of an 1,122cc 'flat four' for 1936. Production increased significantly after WWI and Jowett began to make a name for itself outside its native county, aided by whimsical advertising slogans such as 'The pull of an elephant with the appetite of a canary and the docility of a lamb.'
This 7hp Jowett boasts two-seater plus dickey coachwork and was acquired by the immediately preceding owner in 1951. At that time the engine was rebuilt and other works carried out to enable the car to serve as transport while its owner completed his National Service in the RAF. The little Jowett continued in use up to 1959 when the owner's girlfriend (later his wife) persuaded him to buy something more comfortable. It was then consigned to dry storage with a view to future restoration but, as is so often the case, the rebuild was never started.
The current vendor purchased the Jowett in 1996. Last MoT'd and taxed in September 1998, it was running well when laid up and would make an ideal first vintage car. Offered with the 1998 MoT certificate and Swansea V5 registration document, 'PY 8446' would reward sympathetic restoration and make a welcome addition to VSCC light car events.
