Footnotes

  • The unique vehicle offered here represents a wonderful opportunity for motoring enthusiasts and fans of The Beatles to acquire a 2008 edition of the customised Mini Cooper S given to George Harrison by Brian Epstein in 1966. Proceeds from the sale of this Lot will fully benefit the Material World Charitable Foundation, which Harrison founded in 1973. Built in September 2008 and unregistered, the car is a modern day interpretation of the one created by Harrison during the Beatles’ heyday. In 1966 the band’s manager Brian Epstein gave each of the ‘Fab Four’ a Mini Cooper S as a gift. Harrison had his car painted with psychedelic images and Sanskrit yantras and mantras. That car – illustrated here as well – is still retained by the family.

The Mini was presented to Olivia Harrison, on behalf of the Material World Charitable Foundation, by BMW Mini during the Mini celebration day at Silverstone in 2009. This new interpretation of George’s iconic Mini Cooper was designed by BMW’s Studio Udelhoven and Harrison family friend, David Costa. As an art director and graphic designer, working predominantly in the music business, David Costa has created iconic album sleeves for George Harrison, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Phil Collins and Genesis, The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé. He is also Creative Director for ‘46664’, the campaign vehicle of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Olivia Harrison, the star’s widow said, ‘George was a huge Mini fan and he would have enjoyed creating this new version’

The Material World Charitable Foundation was set up by George Harrison in 1973, coinciding with the release of his Living in the Material World album. Royalties of that album, including the single Give Me Love (Give me Peace on Earth), were donated by George, in perpetuity, to the Foundation.

George established the Foundation to encourage the exploration of alternate and diverse forms of artistic expression, life views and philosophies as well as a way to support established charities and people with special needs. In the autumn of 1973, the first project of the Foundation was the Ravi Shankar Music Festival, which brought together renowned Indian classical musicians to perform and record compositions especially created by Ravi Shankar.

In the 30 years since its inception, the Material World Charitable Foundation has supported hundreds of individuals and organisations supporting those with special needs. In some cases the Foundation has literally transformed people’s lives and in others has made life more bearable in the face of extreme suffering and adversity.

This Mini Cooper S is a manual transmission car and comes with Beige ‘Tuscan’ Leather Gravity interior and is, as one might expect, in effectively brand new condition. It has a fabulous specification including Auto start/stop function; Brake energy regeneration; ‘Crown Spoke’ alloy wheels; Dynamic stability control; Alarm system; Sunroof; Heated seats; Parking sensor; Xenon headlights; Fog lamps; Air conditioning; Radio Mini Boost with CD player; Central locking; On-board computer; six-airbags; and Anti-lock braking.

The Mini will be sold without reserve to the highest bidder to benefit a worthy cause so closely associated with one of the ‘Fab Four’. The buyer will take delivery of a car that may well prove to be a wise investment. An opportunity indeed.

Please note that although VAT is not payable by the buyer on the selling price at this sale, you are reminded that the car is not road-registered. If the buyer wishes to drive the car on public roads, VAT/local taxes would apply at the time of registration.
