Footnotes

  • Based on the chassis of the preceding 2-Litre Continental four-cylinder model, whose overall style and good looks it retained, the six-cylinder 16/80 was new for the 1933 season. The 16/80 employed a 1,991cc overhead-valve Crossley engine, reworked by Lagonda to its own specification, and could be ordered with conventional four-speed manual or pre-selector transmission. Autocar liked Lagonda’s new medium-size model (which took its name from its 16hp RAC rating and 80mph top speed) remarking on its silence, smoothness, brisk acceleration and effortless high-speed cruising. Approximately 260 were made, around half of which are believed to survive.
This particular Lagonda 16/80 was first registered in Glasgow on 4th June 1934 and comes with its original logbook. Chassis number ‘S 10997’ was originally fitted with the ENV pre--selector gearbox but that has since been removed and an Alvis Speed 20 four-speed synchromesh ’box installed, giving a greatly improved gearchange. The current owner purchased the car in May 2003 from Mrs Margaret Sykes, of Woburn. While in Mrs Sykes’ ownership a new stainless steel exhaust system was fitted (May 1999), the clutch replaced (September 1999) and the engine rebuilt, since when very few miles have been covered.
In the autumn of 2004 major bodywork renovation was carried out, all the brightwork re-chromed and the car refinished in British Racing Green. Further refurbishment has been undertaken annually since then including a new dashboard with instruments all working; all four road springs correctly re-set and refitted with all new bushes and pins; and the underside of the car dismantled (battery boxes, foot wells, etc), dipped and powder coated with bases rubberised. The petrol tank has been removed, dipped, sealed inside, repainted and fitted with a new sender; the engine/gearbox drive coupling renewed and new gearbox rubber mounts fitted. Upholstered in red leather, the interior has been re-carpeted and the car comes complete with side screens, hood, hood bag and full tonneau cover.
During Mr & Mrs Sykes’ ownership the 16/80 took part in the Lagonda Club’s Centenary Celebration Champagne Run to France and the current owners drove it to Le Mans for the Club’s 70th Anniversary celebrations in June 2004. In addition, the vendors have attended most of the Club’s AGM weekends at Aldermaston, a number of Club social runs and the VMCC’s annual De Havilland days at Woburn Park to name but a few. The 16/80’s most recent outing was to a wedding in June of this year. Representing an exciting opportunity to acquire an actively campaigned example of this handsome post-Vintage Lagonda tourer, ‘US 6751’ is offered with the aforementioned original logbook, sundry restoration invoices, current MoT/road fund licence and Swansea V5 registration document.
