A Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 Aero engine,
painted black with red lettering picked out on the cam covers, one camshaft and cover removed to show sprung valves, 24 on each bank, mounted with twin Air Ministry magnetos by Rotax and a generator engine driven unit, type K, 24volt, mounted on a rolling display cradle, together with an air ministry 12 cylinder magneto by Watford and various ephemera, the vendor can confirm that the engine contains its internals.

  • This engine appears to be a Rolls-Royce Merlin Mk 113A, but it is fitted with some Merlin Mk621 parts. Merlin Mk 113A engines were fitted to de Havilland Mosquito Mk32 high altitude photo reconnaissance, Mk35 long range fighter/bomber and Mk36 nightfighter aircraft.

    This came from a batch of Merlin 113s, 650 off 225737-227035.
    Contract C/ENG/3713?C28(a)(C28(a)denotes that supplier was Rolls-Royce).
    Engines tested 12 August 1944 to 5 May 1945 all Hillington Glasgow (R-R).
    Merlin 226777 was tested 12 April 1945, destination not stated. It returned to Rolls-Royce, Glasgow to be made to Merlin 113A standard and was despatched 8 May 1947.

    Merlin M621 is a late specification Civil Transport Engine. The cylinder blocks are highly desirable on flying engines today and are often fitted to engines in England. There are however very few, if any, 100 series, of which this 113a is, Rolls-Royce Merlin engines flying today.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.

Some lots may be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price. These lots will be clearly marked with the relevant symbol printed beside the lot number in the catalogue.
