Footnotes

  • Road & Track magazine reported glowingly in 1976 on the prototype XJ12 Coupé, built to US specification, in the following terms: “All XJ’s are a fine cross between a Mercedes-Benz and an American Sedan, combining the precision of the German with the light effort of the American car, giving Jaguars a gracefulness that no other luxury car can duplicate.”

Launched to much acclaim in 1968, Jaguar’s XJ6 refined concepts previously embodied in Jaguar saloons to create a car rivalling the best offered by Mercedes-Benz. Although introduced with the XK six-cylinder engine, it had always been Jaguar’s intention that its flagship saloon would accommodate the new all-alloy V12 engine that had debuted in the E-type sports car, and that duly happened in July 1972. The 5.3-litre 272bhp V12 engine provided a top speed of 145mph in a luxury saloon – performance and comfort significantly in excess of many more expensive European sports cars. Although aimed at Jaguar’s long-time lucrative USA market, the Two-Door Coupé was never approved by the USA authorities and therefore the limited production run of this model makes it one of the rarest of the XJ family and therefore highly sought after by today’s collector.

This highly original coupé has had just three owners from new and is to automatic transmission specification. The coachwork is smartly presented in Squadron Blue with black Everflex-type top and retains original beige leather upholstery. When acquired by the vendor in April 2004 the recorded mileage was 22,500 miles and minimal mileage has been covered since that date. The car is expected to be offered with a Swansea V5C registration document and comes with MoT certificate valid to June 2009, original instruction manual and service passport together with a number of expired MoT certificates.
