BAUER (FRANZ ANDREAS)
[Delineations of Exotick Plants, Cultivated in the Royal Gardens at Kew, Drawn and Coloured and the Botanical Characters], 20 hand-coloured engraved plates of Ericiae (of 30), by Daniel Mackenzie after Franz Bauer, lacking title and Preface leaves, unbound as issued [Nissen BBI 97; Dunthorne 28; Great Flower Books, p.73; Hunt 747; Pritzel 494], folio (platemark 543 x 388mm.), [G. Nicol, 1796-1803, but plates all dated 1 January 1793], sold as a collection of plates

Footnotes

  • Hunt calls Delineations of Exotick Plants "without doubt one of the most beautifully illustrated flower books", noting that Wilfrid Blunt "would unhesitatingly give first place to Francis [Franz] Bauer" as "the greatest botanical artist of all time". Born in Austria, Bauer (1758-1840) worked as a botanical illustrator at Kew Gardens for nearly fifty years. The plates in this collection comprise plates 1-20 as listed by Hunt, all illustrating Ericas, mostly collected from South Africa by Francis Masson, who had been sent out by Kew. "The book of is considerable taxonomic importance, because of its first-publication of several species and because of the accuracy of the plates" (Hunt). The plates are very rare. Only three fascicules were published, with ten plates each. The first was issued in ninety copies ("but ten were spoilt"), the second in eighty copies. We have found no complete set offered at auction in the past twenty-five years.
