Footnotes

  • Provenance: these three drawings were found in a desk, hidden behind a drawer when the Wirral offices of Pugin and Pugin, Stevenson-Jones and Rice were cleared in 1955.

Pugin visited Hildesheim on 24-25 May 1850, and Lubeck on 27-28 May 1850. Sandra Wedgewood has suggested (from photographs) that the third drawing may date from 1852 when Pugin made a number of studies apparently from a book of German topographical views, including similar ones of German castles.

We are grateful to Mr Nick Dermott of The Pugin Society for his assistance in cataloguing these drawings.
