A Fleetwood Cadillac,
Post World War II automotive design in the U.S. was a reflection of the “jet age” employing increasingly outrageous elements through the 1950s. The pinnacle of such design cues was the “fin” with jet aircraft style taillight, conceived by Harley Earl in 1948, drawing influence from the P-38 fighter plane. They would be found on Ford’s Thunderbird, Chrysler and the like. And the pinnacle of the fin has to be the most outlandish offering from Cadillac in 1959.

The fins, of course, received a lot of attention, but the aircraft theme was carried through other parts of the car. The grille encompassed two rows of brightwork, separated by a broad, horizontal bar of chrome. The brightwork was repeated between the taillamps in a dummy grille. The heavily hooded, quad headlamps were accompanied by massive quad turn signals housed in the bumper. That quad theme carried all the way through the car to the twin taillamp nacelles in the elaborate rear tailfins.

With a rearward sloping roofline, the entire effect was that of a jet aircraft, exactly the spirit the designers at Cadillac were hoping for.

Cadillac built 142,272 cars in 1959. Of that, 12,250 were Fleetwood 60 Specials, making it the rarest of all the four-door cars. They were jam-packed with standard equipment, including plus power vent widows, power seats, and dual outside rearview mirrors. Air conditioning was still an option, though, at a surprisingly pricey cost of $474. All 1959 Cadillacs rode on a long 130-inch wheelbase, and stretched to 225 inches in overall length, and were powered by a 390 cubic inches developing 325bhp.

The car offered here is a rarity in itself. A one-owner car from new until the summer of 2008, it remains in good overall condition, showing an original 49,000 miles. Subject to a sympathetic restoration the car is in very good condition mechanically. The paint and chrome are showing the patina of a car of 50 years old, while the interior in ‘50s fashionable black and white two-tone is excellent. The car was retrofitted with an original specification air conditioning system for the comfort of all.

This represents an excellent opportunity to own a true American Mid Century modern icon on its' golden anniversary.
