1965 Citroën ID 19 berline
Chassis no. 3664232

In 1954 Citroën’s top-of-the-range model was the ageing Traction Avant, which was facing ever fresher and more elegant competition. When the DS 19 was launched in 1955, it at once took Citroën from the pre-war era to the space age, stealing a 20-year advantage over the competition. But the DS’s combination of advanced technology and a hasty introduction contributed to poor mechanical reliability at first.
Citroën introduced the ID 19 at the Salon de l’Automobile in October 1956. The purpose of this entry-level DS was to reassure potential new customers and existing Traction Avant owners that the car was reliable, its having been simplified by abandoning the hydraulically actuated gearbox and removing superfluous exterior trim. The interior too was toned down, with all chromed bezels replaced by more restrained plastic items. In short: the ID was a visually and technologically more conservative version of the DS, although using the same bodyshell.
The ID 19 offered here is a regular production car built at the Quai de Javel factory in 1965. It features an off white roof over a red body, while the interior boasts two front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in red Jersey fabric, together with the door panels, which feature contrasting beige leatherette trim to the armrests and pockets. The steel dashboard is finished in two-tone Granit Black and off-white. Thick carpeting covers both floors and sills.
The number of man-hours spent on this car’s total restoration – of body, interior and mechanicals – by a Citroën specialist is in no way reflected in its regular market price, which means that it represents quite exceptional value for money.
