Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    Sotheby's London, Tuesday 21st June 1983, Lot 44.

    Exhibited:
Yale, Yale Centre for British Art, Victorian Watercolours 1992, no. 47.

    Literature:
Scott Wilcox and Christopher Newall, Victorian Landscape Watercolours, (Yale 1992), no. 47, p. 111.

As Wilcox and Newall state 'Birket Foster exhibited a watercolour with the title Burnham Beeches in 1861 and in both the summer and winter exhibitions of 1870. The Spectator's description of the work shown in 1861 as 'very rich in its autumnal tints and glowing sun' suggests that it was the present watercolour [this lot]. The ancient beech trees and oaks in Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire provided a notable subject for artists - a treatment by Charles Davidson as well as a popular place of recreation within easy reach of London'.1
