The traditional origin of the three pignates (small earthenware vessels) on the Pignatelli coat of arms dates to the eleventh century when Gisulfo Pignatelli, leading a fleet against Byzantium ran low of ammunition and launched flaming pignates, thereby winning the battle. His descendant, Antonio Pignatelli reigned as Pope Innocent XII (1691-1700), and included the three pignates under the Papal crown on his coat of arms.
