Scottish architectural historian James Fergusson (1808-1886) went to India on leaving school, and within ten years had made a fortune as an indigo planter in Bengal. He retired to travel through the country exploring the rock-cut temples in the years 1838-9. He made drawings with the assistance of a camera-lucida, and on his return to London he enlisted Dibdin to rework his sketches to illustrate his publication in The Rock Cut Temples of India (1845).
