The present lot is one of only three colour-twist candlesticks recorded in the literature. The other two are illustrated by Bles (1924), pls.2 and 3. The first, a red spiral example, originally from the C. Rees Price Collection is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The second, with blue spiral thread, is now known as The Applewhaite-Abbott Candlestick. It was sold Sotheby's, 24 November 1986, lot 146 and is currently in an American private collection. The Stout Candlestick is similar in form and style to an opaque-twist example, sold Sotheby's, 2 July 1985, lot 577.
