Footnotes

  • This brooch is believed to have been part of a tiara belonging to Queen Victoria. The tiara, composed of fourteen lozenge-shaped clusters (identical to this) and thirteen strawberry leaves, was given by Queen Victoria to her youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice, on her marriage to Prince Henry of Battenberg in 1885. From Princess Beatrice, it passed to her son, the Marquess of Carisbrooke and was worn by his wife in a portrait by Philip Alexius de Laszlo. The tiara is described and illustrated in "Tiaras" by Geoffrey Munn where it also states that its current whereabouts is unknown. The owner of this brooch and also of lot 10, inherited both items from her great aunt, Mrs Vida Norton. Mrs Norton and her entrepreneur husband, Claude, were great friends of the Carisbrookes and frequently entertained the Marquess and Marchioness at their home, Irton Manor, near Scarborough. Both jewels are believed to have been given to the Nortons by the Carisbrookes.
