A Rare South German Gilt-Copper Casket
Third Quarter Of The 17th Century
Octagonal, formed of flat panels secured by small screws engaging gilt columns, and painted with polychrome scenes of Classical figures in landscapes, on spreading base embossed and chased with branches bearing flowerheads and supported by eight feet (one incomplete, one possibly replaced) formed of scrolls each surmounted by a putto-mask, the hinged lid with cusped edge and decorated in high relief with two standing nobleman in 17th-century costume against a background chased with trees all within an applied border of pierced and chased running scrollwork, the iron lock shooting eight bolts, the interior with applied bottom plate embossed and chased in high relief with a landscape scene representing the Judgement of Paris, two small drop handles, and later iron key (2)
