the shaped top with red and gilt tooled leather writing surface above a concave freze drawer flanked by three bowed graduated frieze drawers on each side, with upright 'Wellington' type locking bars, with two adjustable shelves, flanked by panelled sides, on a plinth base, with castors, signed under the central drawer 'John Barrow' and stamped Gillow to drawer edge,with Bramah locks, 130cm wide, 65cm deep, 74cm high (51in wide, 25.5in deep, 29in high).

  • This model of kidney shaped desk is one of Gillow's best known models from the mid 19th century although desks of this pattern were produced by other firms such as Hindley and Holland & Sons. The design relates to an entry in the Gillow Estimate Sketch book (1840) for An Oak Pedestal and Kidney Table supplied to Ferguson & Co. The model is derived from a design published by Thomas Sheraton in his The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, London 1802, pl.58, Gillow produced these desks for several decades in the middle of the 19th century.

    John Barrow was the son W.J Barrow, the Liverpool cabinet-maker whose name appears in the Gillow records between 1800-1840.John Barrow was apprenticed to Leonard Redmayne in 1826 and appears in the Gillow records between 1834 and 1848. See S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, vol II, p.215. A related kidney shaped desk in burr walnut stamped Gillows and bearing John Barrow's pencil signature was sold Sotheby's London, 15 Novmeber 1996, lot 113.

    Other examples of kidney shaped desks by the Gillow firm were sold Bonhams London, 14 March 2006, lot 14, 24 January 2006, lot 262 and 25 November 2003, lot 177. An example in rosewood signed by W.J Barrow was sold Christie's London 13 November 1997, lot 174. Further unsigned examples were sold Sotheby's London 30 November 2001, lot 126, 29 November 2000, lot 97 and 30 November 2001, lot 126.
