Footnotes

  • Provenance: R.H.R Palmer

Reginald Palmer's family business was Huntley and Palmer, the biscuit firm established in the 1830s, of which he was Chairman. Reginald and his wife Lena were noted collectors of Chinese art which was displayed at their home, Hurst Grove near Reading. The couple fist bought Knagxi famille verte, continuing a buying pattern established by Reginald's father in the 1890s. Their tastes however rapidly moved towards Chinese-taste wares, notably Song monochromes and early underglaze-painted porcelain including splendid Ming blue and white wares which were mostly bought in the period 1930-1935. The couple also collected jades which were a particular interest of his wife and their home was liberally furnished with top quality Chinese art. Items from the Palmer Collection were sold, Bonhams, London, Fine Chinese Art, 14 May 2009.
