Persian manuscript on paper, 302 leaves, 24 lines to the page written in clear nasta'liq script in black ink, significant words and headings picked out in red throughout, inner margins ruled in colours and gold, catchwords and occasional commentaries in wide outer margins, numerous diagrams, one double page of illumination and two illuminated headpieces in colours and gold, three miniatures of the Kashmir school, creased, contemporary brown morocco gilt, crudely rebacked

  • This volume appears to contain only part of the Ain-e Akbari, namely the sections between the chapter on metals and on Kotwal (a keeper of a castle), included in which is the section on calligraphers and painters.

    Shaykh Abul Fazl (1551-1602) was the favourite Vizier of the Emperor Akbar, and was the author of the Akbarnama and the Maktubat-i-'Allami as well as the A'in-i Akbari. The A'in-i Akbari contains 'a detailed account of the royal establishments, the administration and statistics of the empire, the creeds and institutions of the Hindus.' (C. Rieu, Catalogue of the Persian Manuscripts in the British Library, I, Oxford 1966, p. 248).

and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £3,000,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
