Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    British private collection.

This rare Vizagapatam chest is based on European prototypes from the late 17th/ early 18th Century. The sparsity of surface ornament is an unusual feature of this piece whereas the majority of pieces tend to have profuse floral inlay. The use of ebony in contrast with a lighter ground is typical of Vizagapatam furniture of the first quarter of the 18th Century. A bureau with similar aesthetic decoration can be found in the Peabody Essex Museum, datable to 1720-30 (Amin Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, pp. 182-85, no. 35).
