A George II gold snuff box,

by Jacob Neale, London 1736, and with later French control mark,
of cartouche form, the cover finely chased with a depiction of the Judgement of Hercules after Paolo de Matteis, within a shell and scroll border, with scroll thumbpieces and finely reeded sides, length 7.9cm, weight 93.2gms.

The present lot, or one very similar, is mentioned by Richard Edgcumbe as having a similar scene to that on a gold outer watchcase by Robert Markham and chased by Augustin Heckel (London 1732), see fig 39 and page 60 of Edgcumbe, The Art of the Gold Chaser in Eighteenth-Century (Oxford 2001).

The original engraving appeared in Anthony, Earl of Shaftesbury's Characteristicks published in 1714. This was one of the most reprinted works on aesthetics in the 18th century and this particular scene was widely reproduced. Edgcume notes that the two clouds above Virtue's head are not present in the engraving.
