Footnotes

  • We are grateful to Professor George Knox for confirming the attribution of the present drawing to Piazzetta, from a photograph. Knox identifies this as 'a fine study of the artist’s wife, Rosa, perhaps dating from the mid-1730s.'

Piazzetta drew his wife, Rosa, on numerous occasions, and these examples can be seen in George Knox, A Tercentenary Exhibition of Drawings, Prints and Books, Piazzetta, National Gallery of Art (Washington, 1983), numbers 28-31. Knox compares the present drawing to one at Windsor Castle (no. 28), where ‘this sheet shows the hands folded in a somewhat similar way, but in other respects it is perhaps a slightly more formal presentation’. Knox adds that the present drawing ‘was used for a more finished study, showing the same woman with flowers in the hair, and the hands arranged differently, sold Sotheby’s New York, 14 January 1992, lot 100.’

Rosa was born in 1701 and married Piazzetta on 22 November 1724. Piazzetta continued to draw her throughout their marriage. Rosa died on 4 January 1771, outliving her husband by seventeen years.
