Footnotes

  • James Hinks and Sons, founded in the 1840's was a company specialising in the manufacture of brass-work and lighting. It built its success upon the invention of Hinks' patent duplex oil burners in 1865, which doubled the amount of light produced by a paraffin light, and were supplied around the world. As the business expanded they acquired showrooms in Birmingham and two in London, Charing Cross Road and New Bond Street. The company subsequently turned their attention to the design of electrical lighting.
