Footnotes

  • The production of pottery vessels in the form of humans or animals in Kashan during the Seljuk period was an innovative development. The exact intention of these vessels, painted either in lustre or turquoise, is not clear. The vessels in the form of seated musicians are believed to have simply been made as 'pleasures of the court' (see Oliver Watson, Ceramics from Islamic Lands, London, 2004, pp. 344-345). In the case of the present lot, it is thought that the bottle in the form of Mother and Child offered protection during the hazardous periods of childbirth in early infancy.

Related figures representing Mother and Child, with the mother holding the child to her right breast, are housed in a private collection in Paris (see L'Orient de Saladin: L'Art de Ayyoubides, Exhibition Catalogue, L'Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris 2001, no. 138, p. 156) and in the Museum of Islamic Ceramics, Cairo (inv. no. 14633). For an almost identical Mother and Child recently sold at Sotheby's, see Arts of the Islamic World, London, 9th April 2008, lot 147.

This lot is accompanied by a Thermoluminescence Test (CiRAM certificate no. 0209OA22R2).
