SLAVERY - ST VINCENT
Schedule of 203 slaves appended to a mortgage from Edmund Fleming Akers "late of the Island of St Vincent" to his brother Aretas Akers, merchant of London, concerning some 165 acres on the island, comprising Lots No.11 and 12 of Monkton's Land, sold for £15,664-14s-4d; with duty stamps, on 6 sheets of vellum, usual dust-staining etc., but overall in good condition, 560 x 680 mm., London, 2 November 1790

  • The schedule lists slaves names and, where relevant, occupations (carpenter and distillers, coopers, boilers, masons, carters, a fireman and a sick nurse) with names of mothers entered against children. The present mortgage relates to part of the estate of Aretas Akers (1734-1785), a substantial landowner in St Kitts and St Vincent, which took his sons Edmund Fleming Akers and Aretas Akers some twenty years to unravel: for further related deeds, see the Akers family business papers in the Senate House Library, University of London (GB 0096 MS 999). Other family papers are held at the Centre for Kentish Studies (U1157, U564/C571-584).

Buyers' Premium and Charges

For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £10,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
