Music and Film: Scores, manuscripts and books sold on behalf of Norma Herrmann
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS (RALPH)
Carnegie Collection of British Music. A London Symphony, miniature score, revised edition, SIGNED BY THE COMPOSER on the first page, and with a SIGNED AUTOGRAPH NOTE tipped in on dedication leaf, also signed by Bernard Herrmann on front wrapper, inscribed by him "(Nov 1/46) Dorking" below Vaughan Williams' signature, and annotated in crayon and pencil, with a copy of the original version of the score bound in at end, publisher's printed wrappers, crudely repaired with tape, small 4to, Stainer & Bell, 1920

Footnotes

  • VAUGHAN WILLIAMS' COPY, MARKED UP FOR PERFORMANCE BY HERRMANN. The London Symphony is a work that Herrmann returned to time and time again throughout his conducting career. Stapled to the front wrapper is a cutting from the Musical Times dated 1959, comprising a letter from Herrmann in which he laments the fact that the revised version of the London Symphony omits six bars from the slow movement. Herrmann considered this passage to be "one of the miraculous moments in music... It will always be an enigma to me why these bars were removed, for in their magic and beauty they had caught something of London which Whistler captured in his Nocturnes"; but when he broached the subject with Vaughan Williams, the composer dismissed them as "horrid modern music... awful stuff".
