A rare cloisonné enameled rectangular plaque (hengaku) after a work by Wada Sanzo
By Ando Jubei, Dated 1943
Entitled Chanticleer [in English] and Shamo [in Japanese], featuring the rear view of a contumacious rooster with its head turned back, defined in silver cloisons with splashes of red and accompanied by the signature and seal of Sanzo (Wada Sanzo 1883-1967), all on a white ground within a rectangular frame with beveled ends and decorated with geometric patterns in black, yellow and orange, the reverse with a small silver plaque inscribed Produced by J. Ando, Japan flanked by the company crest, accompanied by a folding wooden stand with another silver plaque with the title and maker's name, the tomobako self-inscribed with the type of ware, title, designer and sealed signature; together with the original design for the plaque in ink and color and now mounted as a hanging scroll, the underside of the tomobako lid with a long signed and sealed inscription dated Showa 18 (1943).
