Footnotes

  • Vaquero I was a 21ft fin keeler built in 1894 by the Herreshoff Co. for owner Herman B. Duryea. It won the New York Times helmsman prize for winning a series of races at the Larchmont Yacht Club in 1894, as well as winning the Ellis Cup in Newport the same year.

Wasp was a 45ft cutter built by the Herreshoff Company for owner Archibald Rogers in 1892. Wasp was also owned by H. Lippitt. Robert Carrick writes in The Pictoral History of the America's Cup Races, Wasp "measured 72 feet over-all and only 46 on the waterline. [Wasp and Gloriana] were among the first 'rule-beaters' or 'racing machines' which reached their extreme development in the Cup boats ten years later." She was the first Herreshoff yacht captained by Charlie Barr. Halsey Herreshoff wrote about “the breakthrough designs of two 46ft class yachts GLORIANA and WASP that revolutionized the conventions of sailing yacht design during the seasons of 1891 and 1892.”
