Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Ex Amati Collection, London, acquired in the mid-1970s.

    Exhibited:
On loan to the Classics Department, University of Melbourne, Australia, March 1979 - December 1983.

    Literature:
Cf. E. Angelicoussis, The Woburn Abbey Collection of Classical Antiquities, (Mainz 1992), no. 346 for a similar example of sarcophagi acroteria. Another parallel can be found in the Centrale Montemartini, Musei Capitolini, Rome. The sun god, Helios with his radiate crown is often used as acroteria on sarcophagi, as it the Phrygian-capped Attis.
