A Campanian red-figure bell krater
Attributed to the Boston Ready Painter, circa 350 B.C.
The decoration enlivened with added white and ochre, showing on side (a) three standing female figures, their skin painted white, the central figure with her lower half draped in a himation, flanked by two other female figures draped in chitons, all with their hair dressed in kekryphaloi, the figure on the left holding a situla and an oval fan in her right hand, with her left holding a mirror up to the central figure, the figure on the right holding a wreath aloft in her right hand, a situla and leaf-shaped fan in her left, with a tripod stand and foliate sprig between the figures and a dotted swag with lanterns above, side (b) showing three male figures enveloped in himatia, wearing fillets in their hair, with rosettes and a quartered square in the field, elaborate palmettes beneath the handles, set on a baseline of wave pattern, with a band of laurel beneath the rim, 16in (40.5cm) high, repaired with some restoration
