A Campanian red-figure bell krater
Attributed to the Libation Painter, circa 340 B.C.
The decoration enlivened with added white and ochre, showing on side (a) a libation scene, with two Oscan warriors wearing plumed helmets, their armour worn over short belted tunics, holding spears and shields, facing a female figure on the left, wearing local dress and holding an oinochoe in her left hand, and a skyphos in her right, with a lidded pyxis below, side (b) showing a central female figure draped in a chiton with her hair dressed in a kekryphalos, holding a spotted sash, flanked by two himation-clad youths, one holding a staff, with elaborate palmettes beneath the handles, set on a baseline of wave pattern, a band of laurel beneath the outer rim, 16in (40.5cm) high
