A large Apulian red-figure volute krater
Attributed to the Geddes Painter, circa 365 B.C.
The decoration enlivened with added white paint, showing on side (a) an Ionic naiskos scene, with two warriors inside, possibly the Dioscuri, a central column between them, with a sash hanging from the ceiling, the one to the left wearing a short tunic, holding a spear in his right hand with a pilos helmet in his left, the other to the right standing nude, a chlamys draped around his shoulders, with a spear in his right hand and a shield in his left, outside the naiskos are six other nude male youths, all with drapery around their shoulders, two seated at the top on either side, facing in towards the naiskos, each wearing a wreath and holding a phiale with laurel sprig, below them stand the remaining four youths in relaxed poses holding laurel and phialai, with ovolo and tongues on the shoulder, the neck decorated with confronting winged griffins flanking a central foliate motif, a band of berried laurel with a central rosette in added white above, side (b) showing a Dionysiac scene, the lower register with a central figure of Dionysus seated on rocks holding a phiale in his right hand, a thyrsus in his left, flanked by a maenad standing to the left, her hair dressed in a kekryphalos, holding a cista in her right hand and a kantharos in her left, and a nude satyr on the right holding a situla and phiale, the upper register depicting two satyrs on the left, one holding a sash and a phiale with laurel, before him sits the other holding a kantharos and a phiale with laurel, looking back to the maenad on the right holding a phiale with laurel and a sash in her right hand, a cista in her left, with rosettes in the field, tongues on the shoulder, the neck decorated with a central palmette, flanked by split palmettes to either side, a band of berried vines above, elaborate palmettes under the strap handles, flanked by arching swans heads in white at the front and black at the back, the volutes with white and ochre mascaroons at the front and black at the back, with meander and saltire squares along the baseline, the exterior rim decorated with ovolo above and scrolling wave pattern underneath, 27½in (69.7cm) high

    Ex private collection, acquired in 1976. This is the name vase of the Geddes Painter. It was named as such by Dale Trendall as a token of his friendship with Graham Geddes.
