Footnotes

  • It is uncertain at what date Fred Hall actually settled in Newlyn but Stanhope Forbes first acknowledged his presence in 1885. In 1884 he exhibited An Orchard near Newlyn, Cornwall at the Royal Academy and 1893 a letter firmly claimed that he had then ’been ten years a Newlyner‘.1 In any case, it would be safe to say that by the winter of 1885 Hall had settled in Newlyn and the present lot is surely one of his earliest paintings from this period.

This very pretty depiction is a wonderful example of the honesty with which Hall describes his sitter. As a caricaturist he was well know among fellow artists for his exceptional observations of character and demeanour and using the square-brush technique he very simply brings out the calm hard-working nature of this young local girl. In the bright Newlyn sun, her dusty pink bonnet and blouse radiate with subtle colour. Her youth is highlighted in the rosy hues of her skin yet her expression is steady and calm as she focuses on the task she has no doubt been engaged with since morning.
