Footnotes

  • The refinement of both form and glaze on this important Jug would suggest that it was most likely made in the short period between Tsurunosuke Matsubayashi arriving at the Leach Pottery in 1922 to re-build the wood-fired climbing kiln and the autumn of 1923 when Hamada left the Leach Pottery to return to Japan. The original kiln built by Leach and Hamada was the first of its type in Europe, however their technical experience was limited and their success rate in firings from this first kiln was very low.

In Leach's autobiographical book Beyond East and West he wrote of the building of the pottery in 1920 and how Hamada “always speaks of the following three years with nostalgic gratitude, for there it was that he found himself and the sure pathway of his life."
