A Rock Scully red flight case used on the road with The Grateful Dead, 1970s-1980s
Used to transport stage equipment mainly in the band's equipment truck (but also on airplanes and ships) while touring; case is made of sturdy wood painted bright red, has metal reinforcements around frame and corners, has five wheels on bottom, two handles on either end; opens on hinges to reveal two wooden drawers inside; a plastic placard on top front reads "Manager" while white stenciling on side front reads "Grateful Dead," though it's partially obscured due to the dozens of Grateful Dead-related stickers Scully himself pasted over entire surface of case.
26 x 26 x 23in

Footnotes

  • "Outside of the band's instruments, this case was probably the most carefully protected of anything on the stage. It contained all the relevant contracts not only for the concerts, but also all the paperwork for our recording, publishing, press, and promotional concerns. Even more importantly, it contained our cash disbursements for the band, crew, drivers, and riggers, and, until the end of the show, our cashier's check for the evening's performance. This flight case was on every tour from 1970 until 1984. It was also on two tours of Europe and even went to Egypt as part of the recording gear. The stickers tell only a small part of the story, but if you read them carefully, there is a lot of history between the lines. For touring, the bottom of the case usually held the hotel sound system as well as promotional copies of our latest record."
